The Alfoli is one of l'Escala's most representative buildings. Its name is of Arab origin, al-hory. It used to be the salt Exchange, and it has also been used for several other purposes since its renovation during the second half of the 17th century. It was used as a store, goods redistribution centre and control point for merchandise that arrived by sea (salt, cereal and other products) as well as export produce (salted fish, wine, lace and coral).
